My thoughts on Nightbringer

So I was present during the Obey Me Devs AMA (ask me anything) on reddit and asked my own question! (It wasn't answered)
I have some....feelings about it.
So let's go over what we know.
The OG Obey Me game isn't going to be updated with further lessons. The only updates it will receive will be for events (story, birthday, anniversary etc).
The story that takes place up to Lesson 80 will eventually tie in to the story in Nightbringer, however, we don't know when that will be.
The boys 3D models will be updated eventually to reflect other outfits.
More character songs are coming.
More merch coming
Michael will talked about more in the story, but we will just have to wait and see if he will have a character reveal.
We will get to learn more details about the war
We will get to see Levi interact with Henry 1.0 and how Lucifer got Cerberus
The boys won't be darker in personality, and will be very similar to how they were in the celestial realm.
Phone calls have been the main focus for more romance
Dating a single character, or multiple particular characters have been "more fleshed out" and characters will "react to those relationships"
Side characters will be datebale
More than 7 little Ds exist, and they all live in the castle
The story isn't fully voiced, but you can hear the voices more in other parts of the game
AR for photo taking isn't in the works
The devs tried to make Nightbringer how they originally wanted it as players, and no prior Obey Me Knowledge is needed to play. They hope new players will go experience the OG story.
No, Lucifer isn't sleeping on a slab on concrete (?) Apparently this is an often asked question lol
Now, here's my thoughts on it.
Not gonna lie, I'm a little miffed with the devs for waiting until a week before the release to admit that the OG game wasnt going to be be updated further for the main story.
There's no lead up to why MC is gonna go to the past, or that something is about to go wrong. I won't go too far into it because of spoilers (most players are seemingly stuck in the 30s and 40s). But it starts out like a new season and then just...drops.
Nightbringer has had to have been in the works for a WHILE to be able to have 3D models and a TikTok/Snapchat app made with those 3D models. They knew a nuke was coming, and they didn't say anything.
That being said, I understand why they don't from a writers point of view.
It's not a total retcon and reset. This isn't a new MC, its the same MC who has amnesia. They don't recall the brothers or side characters, and they're in the past. Imagine how frustrating it would be to know what happened and be waiting for your MC OC to catch up in the story and know what you, the player, know.
MC is meant to be the player, so what you know, your MC knows and vice versa. We aren't meant to know until later.
If you were writing a story, and needed to basically rewrite it, amensia and being sent to the past is one way to do it.
But, just nuking the story this way kinda burns the players. Especially those who've dropped hundreds if not thousands of dollars buying DP or being VIP. People have worked their asses off collecting every card they can and leveling them up, in hopes of tackling the rest of the lessons.
Except now there's no more new lessons.
And we just found out.
More birthday, holiday, anniversary and story events will come around, but really those are easy to pass with any cards.
There's no need in breaking your neck to collect cards, for later lessons.
Also, since the question was repeatedly ignored: will cards and whatnot transfer over? The answer is probably no.
Despite the game having all the same apps with new additions, and it eventually tying into the story we left off from: it looks as though they don't want to bring over the hundreds of cards they released in the OG.
Which burns us older exchange students who've played for a while. I've got several UR cards that are leveled up to 100 and have as much of them unlocked as I can on Devil Tree.
I could see being very easily op if we got to bring over our cards. But at the same time...I worked hard on them, and I don't want to have them essentially taken from me.
Once Nightbringer gets going, I won't have a reason to come back to the OG unless it's a birthday event, seeing as all the story events that aren't birthday get added to Lonely Devil eventually. Unless it's a Mammon or Diavolo card I haven't gotten yet, I have no desire at all to grind for cards--knowing that I can't take it with me.
I've seen multiple tweets and comments from players saying they immediately canceled their VIP memberships due to feeling screwed over, and being unsure how they're going to work with Nightbringer, as it too wasn't answered during the hour long ama.
Will VIP cover both games at once? Or do they expect players to pay separately for each game? Hopefully the devs will answer it tomorrow, or we will find out soon.
On the bright side, this means players who are stuck midway through the OG story will be on equal footing in the new game with older exchange students. It's a chance for everyone to level up their cards more evenly to have better progress through the new story.
And if you wish to read the old story, it's still available, but you don't need to feel like you gotta bust your ass to get there. The story is inevitably going to change, seeing as MC is messing with the timeline of events.
That being said, I'd be wary of waiting years to finish it. Solmare once had a ton of Otome games to play, but the condensed them all into a single app. For fear you might lose your progress at some point, I'd take your time, but don't abandon it completely.
I said it before, but don't worry about birthdays unless it's your favorite brother or character, events will be added to Lonely Devil later on.
Speaking of which, if they're basically going to archive the game...it might be a good idea to release birthdays in Lonely Devil as well. To give people more an incentive to play the OG, I'm sure I missed out on some and would like to at least read the stories to them.
So this is all for now, but I'm curious to know what you all think! Feel free to let me know in the comments, and bet your ass that if the leveling system is different (I doubt it though) I'll be writing a guide for it. So keep an eye on that count down!
